Book Inspo

Our True Intent is All For Your Delight’ by John Hinde has been one of my favourite photography books since I first spotted it at an exhibition, about 15 years ago. Full of colour saturated images taken at Butlin's holiday camps in the late 1960s and early 1970s, it’s not hard to see why this book is one my favourites.

Hinde was known for his ellaborately staged scenes, beautifully captured and for his innovative use of colour. Such were the trademarks of a John Hinde postcard. It also serves as a time capsule of British fashion and decor of the decade.

It’s the sense of a dreamworld and of nostalgia for a time that was, that resonated with me. Also, as a collector of vintage imagery - I love holiday postcards and often use them in my work. (Sometimes the handwritten messages are just as interesting as the fronts.)

The surreal colour in Hinde’s imagery has influenced my work even today. Not to mention the capturing of a moment in history and presenting it in a way that elevates it to the dreamy, hopeful way that our minds often do. Hence the phrase: looking back with rose-tinted glasses.

Don’t just take my workd for it, come see for yourself…
