This piece is part of the No Wallflower series, a collection of textile collages inspired by Suffragette banners and techniques traditionally considered ‘women’s work’.

It all began with the discovery of a blue plaque in St Leonards-on-Sea, where the artist is based, of local woman Elsie Bowerman: a Barrister, Suffragette and Titanic survivor.

What resulted is a series of textile wall hangings featuring found photographs (some from the artist’s own family albums), vintage imagery, pre-loved objects, a range of materials and all with tassel fringing reminiscent of childhood memories of apholstered furniture found in relatives’ homes but morphed into something out of Priscilla Queen of the Desert, also from the artist’s memories of growing up in Australia.

The works are titled with sage advice either handed down from generations (usually between women) or overheard by the artist. They are comments on memory, tradition and the notion of ‘women’s work’.

This piece featured in the Extremely Supernormal exhibition and was part of the ING Discrning Eye Exhibition 2023 (selected by artist, Chris Levine).
